This section lists the different roles that are applicable to the various Fellowships, and additionally indicates if the role is mandatory or optional.

Lead applicant is the individual applying for a Fellowship. This individual is responsible for filling in an application, editing and completing it. Also, the lead applicant must select and coordinate among sponsors/external supervisors/collaborators, to ensure that a complete form is submitted by the deadline.
It is the responsibility of the Lead Applicant to ensure that all letters of support/ recommendation provided on the application are on the institutional letter-head of the participant providing the letter, is duly attested and dated, and submitted as a PDF file confidentially to email@example.com by the deadline of the Application round.
Sponsor is typically an established senior researcher at the host institution; normally the head of department or director of the sponsoring host institution.
This role is NOT mandatory at the preliminary application stage; however, the most probable Sponsor must be indicated on the Preliminary Application for reference purpose.
On the Full application, the Sponsor role is MANDATORY. The nominated Sponsor on the application needs to fulfill the following criteria:
• He/ She must hold a contract of employment that extends beyond the tenure of the Fellowship;
• He/ She must be in a position to guarantee space and resources at the institution/ department for the duration of the grant;
• He/ She must have the administrative authority to sign up to the India Alliance’s Grant Conditions & Policies.
In addition, the Sponsor must provide a letter of support that indicates that if an award is made:
• The Fellow will be granted the status and prerogatives of other academic staff of similar seniority.
• The Fellow will abide by the policy on time commitment specified by India Alliance (IA) for the respective competition. [For the level of ECF, this requirement is 100% research time on IA funded project. For Senior and and Intermediate Fellows, IA requires a commitment of 70% and 80% of research time on the IA funded project, respectively.
• The resources the host institution intends to provide to meet the research goals and how the host institution intends to support the career development of the Fellow.
Please note that the lead applicant cannot act as a sponsor on their own application.
The External Sponsor role on the application can be fulfilled by the individual in whose laboratory the Applicant wishes to utilize the “Work Outside the Host Institution (WOHI)” provision. This is an OPTIONAL role on the Application, both at the preliminary and full application stage. However, in case the applicants chose to utilize the provision of WOHI External Sponsor(s) has/have to be invited electronically to confirm his/her participation on the application. The letter of support from this role is mandatory at the full application stage in such instance. They should be able to guarantee that the applicant will have access to the facilities required and provide the required scientific support.
The Fellowship Supervisor is the person in whose laboratory and under whose supervision; the applicant intends to carry out the Early Career Fellowship project. This individual must have a contract of employment at the sponsoring host institution in India and have tenure beyond the duration of the proposed Fellowship. They should guarantee the applicant access to laboratory space and resources required for the project as well as provide relevant scientific guidance for the tenure of the Fellowship. This role is MANDATORY for both preliminary and full application stage. A signed letter of support from the Fellowship Supervisor must be provided at the preliminary stage for the application to be considered complete for processing
The Current Supervisor(s) is/ are established researcher(s) who has known the applicant for a significant period of time and can comment on the scientific abilities of the applicant. This role is MANDATORY at both preliminary and full application stage. A signed letter of recommendation from this role is mandatory at the preliminary application stage for the application to be considered complete for processing.
NOTE: If the applicant has recently moved to the current position (within last one year), an additional letter of recommendation is be encouraged from a previous supervisor who can comment on the applicant’s scientific abilities.
Please also note that there is no restriction on the number of letters of recommendation that can be provided on an application.
The mentor role is OPTIONAL at the preliminary stage; however is mandatory at the full application stage for the Intermediate and Early Career Fellowships in the Clinical and Public Health scheme and for the Intermediate Fellowships, in the Basic research scheme. A letter of support highlighting the mentoring plan is required from the person agreeing to act as Mentor and is mandatory at the full application stage. Hence, applicants are advised to give a careful consideration to the role of a mentor at the time of making an application.
The collaborator role is OPTIONAL at both preliminary and full application stage. However, if collaborator(s) is/are chosen on the application, (a) letter(s) of support is required from the person(s) agreeing to act as collaborator(s). Scientific/medical/academic colleagues associated with a research proposal are collaborator(s). However, in case the applicants chose collaboration on the application, all collaborators have to be invited electronically to confirm his/her participation on the application. The letter of support from this role is mandatory at the full application stage in such instance. Typically these are individuals who will supply reagents, assist in specific protocols, provide resource services etc.
A letter of Recommendation, in addition to the Support letter from the Fellowship supervisor, is MANDATORY on the Early Career Fellowship, both at the preliminary and full application stage for the application to be considered complete for processing.
NOTE: This recommendation letter cannot be provided by the person chosen as the Fellowship Supervisor on the application
Any established researcher who has known the applicant for a significant period of time and can provide a detailed letter of recommendation commenting on the scientific abilities may be chosen for this role. They may be the candidate’s thesis guide or Postdoctoral supervisor.
