The Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance invites applications from suitably qualified persons or organizations to support its Communications needs.

 

Organization Overview: The Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance is a public charity registered in India since 2008. It is funded equally by the Wellcome Trust, UK and Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, with the broad aim of building excellence in biomedical research in India by selecting and supporting future leaders in the field. In addition to its research fellowships, India Alliance supports an integrated research ecosystem that values ethics, good management and the public communication of science to enhance knowledge and drive policy. Position Overview: The Communications Consultant would be a person working independently or as part of a larger organization. This position would be responsible for enhancing the brand value of India Alliance in India and overseas, and supporting the growth of a science and innovation driven policy narrative. The position would –

  • Develop a communications strategy and plan which explains how India Alliance will use communications to leverage greater impact from its activities, and to enable the India Alliance to exert greater influence on the India research ecosystem.
  • Manage the day-to-day external communications of India Alliance, including but not limited to press relations, website, social media and event publicity.
  • Devise creative and sustainable mechanisms to publicize India Alliance and its various programmes towards building a stronger brand identity.
  • Support India Alliance’s vision and liaise with its Public Engagement, Grants, Finance and Operations teams.

 

The person or organization should have –

 

  • Permission to work in India and presence in Hyderabad or New Delhi, preferably latter
  • Good knowledge of the science, research and policy ecosystem in India, and the larger international context
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Good time management skills and able to work under short deadlines
  • At least five years of experience in a Communications role, especially in press relations
  • Experience working in or with a public or charitable or educational institution (desirable).

 

Application Process: This is not a regular staff, but a Consultant position to provide external inputs and support to India Alliance. The remuneration will be based on experience and the value it brings to India Alliance.

Essential:

  • PhD in Life Science/Biological Sciences/similar areas
  • Indian citizen or NRI/OCI willing to relocate to Hyderabad or New Delhi
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to work to deadlines independently, and as part of a team

Desirable:

  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Administrative experience within the context of a research funding organisation or a university    will be an asset (Training will be provided on the job)

The position requires:

  • Ability to understand biomedical research proposals and identify appropriate peer reviewers
  • Attention to detail
  • Commitment to high standards
  • A strong desire to develop and apply administrative and business process skills
  • Ability to work in a team

Grants Advisers will be trained in the following areas:

  • Handling a portfolio of research grant applications and awards
  • Managing the processes associated with fellowship applications and funding
  • Selecting referees and maintaining positive relationships with peer reviewers
  • Liaising with the scientific community, developing positive relationships with applicants and grant-holders
  • Assisting in other activities of the organization as per need
