I graduated with a PhD in Condensed matter Physics from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Mumbai) before moving to Biology via a brief postdoctoral stint in Chemistry. I was associated with the University of California Irvine, where I was a Long term Postdoctoral fellow of the Human Frontier Sciences Program (HFSP). I returned to India to join the Department of Biological Sciences (TIFR, Mumbai) in 2006 where I currently hold an Associate Professor position. I was an International Senior Research Fellow with the Wellcome Trust (UK) from 2006-2012. I am a Senior fellow with the Wellcome-DBT India Alliance since 2013

I believe that the excitement of science should reach the most isolated communities. I love the outdoors and often go hiking to villages in Maharashtra (http://www.tifr.res.in/~roop/Travels/). On these occasions, I have spent hours talking to children. I have tried to explain what doing science means, why it is important and how one works in a laboratory. I have also told them that many of the best scientists come from the smallest villages in our country. Perhaps I will someday meet one of them at a meeting in front of a poster !!
