I ended up studying biotechnology in college after a chaotic series of events designed to not make me study biology. But it happened, and it became quickly obvious that I could not pipette, but could program stuff reasonable well. So bioinformatics it was to be. And thanks to the influence of Professors Gautam Pennathur and Krishnan Sankaran at Anna University and a protein chemistry summer internship with Professor P. Balaram at IISc, I decided that I would do research, and that I would work on protein structures. Again the latter was not to be, and I ended up looking at bacterial genomes and regulatory networks with Nick Luscombe in Cambridge. That is what I continue to do today, always hoping that I find the motivation once again to stare at protein structures some day.
